Role Description

We welcome applications from passionate, creative and motivated researchers to lead the delivery of innovative microbiology research exploring how biological processes move carbon into weathered rock and soil parent materials. 

About the Role

This is a Research Fellow role embedded within a major externally funded research programme in soil science. You will lead the delivery of a substantial component of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, delivering field, laboratory and experimental research to understand how microbial communities, epilithic organisms and plant roots contribute to organic carbon transport and transformation during soil formation. The role will involve designing and running experiments, coordinating field and laboratory activities in the UK and internationally, analysing and interpreting complex datasets, and publishing high-quality scientific outputs. Working closely with the research lead and wider project team, you will help deliver novel interdisciplinary research across soil microbiology, weathering processes and carbon cycling.

About You

You will be educated to doctoral level in soil microbiology, environmental microbiology, soil science, environmental science, biogeoscience or a related discipline, with experience of conducting independent research in laboratory and field settings. You will have expertise in microbiological or molecular approaches relevant to environmental samples, and be confident designing and delivering experiments, interpreting data and preparing work for publication. With strong organisational and problem-solving skills, you will be able to manage multiple research activities to deadline and work effectively both independently and as part of a wider interdisciplinary team. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to engage confidently with collaborators, students and external partners. Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally for fieldwork and collaboration is essential.

We are seeking an enthusiastic anatomic pathologist to join a team of three faculty in a purpose-built Veterinary Pathology Centre. This role will enhance our 100 strong team of teaching and research staff in the University of Surrey School of Veterinary Medicine.

The Veterinary Pathology Centre was built eight years ago and contains both a CL2 (containment level 2) post-mortem area with viewing gallery, and a CL3 post-mortem area. Private diagnostic post-mortems and APHA (Animal Plant Health Agency) surveillance post-mortems are undertaken at the site. 

The role would include undertaking diagnostic service, including biopsy and post-mortems, teaching final year (year 5) students on intramural rotations (IMR) post-mortem skills, and participating in lecturing, practical classes and assessment of year 1-4 undergraduates. Supervision of residents is also expected.

Providing CPD activities to external partners may also be required from time to time. 

You will have an interest in broadening your veterinary profile through the development and delivery of undergraduate teaching in veterinary pathology. You will be supported in achieving this by participation in our in-house, externally accredited Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in ����Vlog. 

In addition to completing the Graduate Certificate, for those interested in developing further skills in education, study at Masters level (part-time) may also be supported (financially and in time allocation). There would also be opportunities for individuals to develop their career through research or other aspects as preferred. 

About you

Successful candidates must have a veterinary degree that is registerable with the RCVS, experience in surveillance and post-mortem services, and be interested in teaching and supervising students in the veterinary pathology aspects of our curriculum.

To be successful in this role, you will have excellent communication skills, an appetite for innovative teaching (which you will find is greatly enabled by our £11m purpose built state-of-the-art Veterinary Pathology Centre, existing teaching materials and technology enhanced learning facilities), strong organisational skills, and enjoy working in a team.

Qualifications in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology in ACVP, ECVP or FRCPath, or board eligibilty is also a requirement for the role.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is one of the five academic departments in the Faculty of Engineering, and it offers a full spectrum of BME programmes, from BSc, MSc to PhD. The team is the first group to offer Biomedical Engineering related undergraduate programme in Hong Kong, and has made great achievements in BME education, innovative research, and technology transfer. Currently BME has six thematic research areas, including Biomedical Imaging, Sensing, AI and Wearable Technology, Brain-Machine Interface and Neural Engineering, Molecular/Cellular Engineering and Biomaterials, Precision Diagnostics and Therapy, Prosthetics-Orthotics, Smart Ageing and Rehabilitation Engineering, and Sports Science and Technology. The Opportunity

You will coordinate and implement marketing and communications initiatives that build the profile, reputation and impact of NICM Health Research Institute. Working across media, digital, social media, website, newsletter and promotional channels, you will translate complex health and scientific research into accurate, accessible content for specialist and non-specialist audiences.

You will work closely with researchers, Institute leadership, industry partners, donors, students and the University’s central Marketing and Media & PR teams.
