The University of Aleppo is the second largest university in Syria. The university was established in 1958, building on an engineering faculty that was set up in 1946. 

The public university includes some 25 faculties, 12 technical institutes, seven open education programmes, a library that is among the largest in the country, and six teaching hospitals. Research and postgraduate studies are conducted in all departments. 

The undergraduate enrolment at the University of Aleppo is about 60,000, while its postgraduate programmes have registered about 6,000 students. They are served by more than 2,000 faculty members. The university makes a number of scholarships available. 

There are a number of engineering faculties, medical faculties, scientific faculties, and literature faculties, as well as an Institute of Arabic Scientific Heritage and an Institute of Languages. 

The university has international collaborations with higher education institutions from across the world, including its neighbours in the Arab world as well as the US, Japan, India, Malaysia, Iran, Spain, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Argentina, Venezuela and Australia.

While there has been some disruption in recent years owing to conflict, the university continues to operate in pursuit of its aim to contribute to the growth and development of the country’s human capital.

Among its alumni are Mohammad al-Bashir, Syria’s current prime minister, and other senior politicians, as well as noted writers and artists including the novelist Ibtisam Ibrahim Teresa and the film-maker and activist Waad Al-Kateab, who directed the Academy Award-nominated documentary For Sama.
