The National University of Loja is the oldest public university in southern Ecuador. It can trace its roots back to 1859, when it offered law, theology and medicine. It adopted its current title in 1943 and has expanded provision across a wider range of disciplines during the remainder of the twentieth century.
Students can study across fields of agriculture and renewable natural resources, education arts and construction, energy, industry and non-renewable resources, languages, health, law, social sciences and administration, and the distance and online education unit. 
A rich biological environment is reflected in the 50,000 species collected by the Reinaldo Espinosa Herbarium and three experimental units – a semi-arid unit at El Chilio, evergreen forest at El Padmi,  and dry forest at Zapotepamba.
In 2024 more than 2,000 students took part in 23 social programmes reckoned to have a total of nearly 100,000 beneficiaries.

Landscapes of Catastrophe: archaeology, social-ecological and biological contexts for the Great Irish Famine, 1845-52 is an interdisciplinary project investigating the ecological, biological and social contexts of An Gorta M r, the most profound demographic and diasporic event in Ireland over the last millennium during which more than two million people died or emigrated. The project develops new approaches to constraining environmental and landscape chronologies for the period 1650-1960 CE and uses these to reconstruct demographic and agricultural change through bioarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental evidence. Six case-study landscapes across Ireland form the core analytical framework, each illuminating different demographic, environmental, social, and religious impacts of the Famine.

The successful candidate will contribute a broad, multi-isotopic skillset to the project. They will both collate published bioarchaeological data and undertake multi-isotope analyses (C/N/Sr/O/H/Pb) of famine era human and animal remains from across Ireland. They will have expertise in dentine incremental analysis and an understanding of how isotopes can provide insights concerning physiological stress and diet, in addition to other relevant themes related to the palaeodemographic and socio-economic changes caused by the Famine. They will work closely with the project Co-Leads to deliver integrated biogeochemical work packages within the context of broader archaeological and archival work of the project.

The successful candidate will receive tailored training and mentorship as appropriate, and will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at QUB, including the 14CHRONO Centre (https://14chrono.org) and the Institute for Heritage and Environmental Science(https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/NBE/Research/facilities-infrastructure/HeritageandEnvironmentalScience/).

Successful applicants will have responsibilities for independent and directed research, supervision of technical analysis, assisting in the planning and day-to-day management of the bioarchaeological work packages, related collaboration and outreach. The successful candidate will join laboratories with internationally recognised strengths in radiocarbon dating, palaeoecology, scientific archaeology and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the past. The post benefits from more than £6m of recent investment in geochronology, isotope geochemistry, and analytical instrumentation (including XRF, X ray imaging, Micro CT, SEM, LA ICP MS, TQ ICP MS, and microprobe), offering extensive opportunities for training, skills development, and professional growth.

About the person:

The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:


	Have or be about to obtain a relevant PhD in Archaeological Science or closely cognate discipline (must be obtained within three months of appointment)
	Have specific, relevant* research experience to include:
	An established expertise and proven portfolio in multi-isotope analyses (some of C, N, Sr, O, H, Pb).
	Demonstrable experience in the collection, preparation and analysis of osteological materials.
	Experience of conducting all stages of incremental dentine analysis.
	Proven capacity to expand skillset to incorporate new and novel proxies and/or techniques.
	Proven ability to publish in national/international journals (commensurate with stage of career).
	Experience of working effectively as part of a research team in the development and promotion of research project results.
	Experience of archaeological fieldwork, sampling and archival assessment.

The position is primarily focussed on the delivery of courses within the school’s undergraduate and postgraduate nursing or midwifery programs. You will work with guidance and direction from course coordinators. The successful candidate will be working in the Durham University Space Research Centre (SPARC) and the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation (CfAI) in the Department on Physics.

SPARC is a new research centre connecting experts across space technology, operations, governance and security. Our vision encompasses not only the pursuit of cutting-edge technologies but also the holistic understanding of space and its broader societal, ethical, and environmental impacts. Through responsible, multi-disciplinary research, including novel sensors, environment modelling, machine learning, governance and operations, we aim to address the complex challenges and opportunities of space exploration.

CfAI is a large research group in the Department of Physics at Durham University with approximately seventy staff and research students. CfAI's mission is to design and develop novel instrumentation based on cutting edge technologies. CfAI develops state-of-the-art ground and space-based instruments for applications across a wide range of disciplines including adaptive optics, spectroscopy, biophysics, remote sensing, laser communications, and fusion diagnostics. We host the ESA affiliated lab on free-space optics.

CfAI has provided major instruments for many of the world's leading astronomical facilities including the James Webb Space Telescope, William Herschel Telescope, Gemini Telescopes, Southern African Large Telescope and the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. Major current ground-based instrumentation projects in CfAI include HARMONI and MOSAIC, the first-light spectrograph and multi-object spectrograph for the upcoming 39m diameter Extremely Large Telescope.

About the opportunity

This Senior Lecturer position is open to a candidate capable of providing high-quality teaching, unit development and coordination and research in the Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine studies. The candidate will be required to teach a range of topics in the field of Modern Greek literary, social, political and cultural history, supervise and where necessary participate in the teaching of language units at all levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced); and take an active role in supervision of Honors, Masters and PhD students.

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Greek literature, culture and/or history and have experience in teaching and research in higher education institutions. Applicants should have a strong research record of academic publications in Greek literature, culture and/or history and be prepared to take on organisational and administrative roles within the Discipline of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies and the School of Languages and Cultures.

Your key responsibilities will be to:


	Design, coordinate and teach a range of topics in the field of Modern Greek and Byzantine literary and cultural history;
	Supervise and participate in the teaching of language units at all levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced);
	Fulfil the necessary administrative and leadership tasks to ensure the smooth running of the Discipline;
	Contribute to collaborative teaching at Discipline and School level and work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment;
	Supervise honours and postgraduate research students in Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies;
	maintain a research profile compatible with the Discipline, School and Faculty research programmes through publication, research grant application and the organization of international conferences and postgraduate or public seminars;
