Semey Medical University was originally founded in 1953 as the Semipalatinsk State Medical Institute in Semey, Kazakhstan. Initially opening with a single Faculty of Medicine and 320 students, the institution later became the Semipalatinsk State Medical Academy in 1997 before adopting its current identity as Semey Medical University. 

Today, it is recognised as one of Kazakhstan’s leading medical universities, with nearly 6,000 students, more than 400 academic staff, and over 25,000 graduates working across Kazakhstan and internationally.

The university is located in Semey, in Kazakhstan’s Abai Region. In addition to its main campus, SMU operates branches in Pavlodar and Ust-Kamenogorsk (Öskemen). A defining feature of the university is its integration of education, scientific research, and practical clinical training through its university hospital and affiliated clinical training bases.

SMU offers undergraduate, internship, residency, master’s, and doctoral programmes across the fields of medicine and health sciences. Courses include general medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and public health, alongside a wide range of postgraduate medical specialisations. 

The university’s Educational and Clinical Centre supports practical and technology-enhanced medical training through simulation centres, educational-clinical facilities, and robotic simulation technologies. Research activity focuses on areas including cardiology, surgery, emergency medicine, ecology, public health, and radiation medicine.

Internationalisation has long been a feature of student life at SMU. It became the first medical university in Kazakhstan to establish a dedicated Faculty for Foreign Students in 1995 and has offered English-medium medical education since 1998. The university has also developed partnerships with institutions in countries across the globe including Turkey, Russia, India, and Japan, supporting academic exchange and collaborative initiatives.
