The Department of Biological Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry announces a 4-year position for a university assistant (prae-doc) on the topic of developing chemical tools for investigating microbial interactions (research group Microbial Biochemistry, Böttcher lab). Our research group is currently looking for highly talented and highly motivated PhD students (prae-doc) with a strong background in Synthetic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and/or Pharmacology to join our Microbial Biochemistry Research Group at the University of Vienna. Our vision is to develop customized chemical tools to selectively target viability, virulence and behavior of individual species in a complex microbiome which would open the possibility of chemical microbiome engineering in the future. Your personal sphere of influence:

As a university assistant prae-doc, you will complement/complete the research team around exploring chemical strategies for the customized modulation of bacterial population behavior with the goal of selectively interfering and controlling microbe-phage interactions. You will also take over tasks such as investigating the chemical interactions and design specialized synthetic devices that allow to investigate microbial viruses (phages) from a chemical point of view. To this aim, a solid background in synthetic chemistry ideally complemented with preexisting knowledge about microbiology or biochemistry of microbes are desirable. What makes us special as a team is that we hereby focus mainly on novel anti-infective compounds including inhibitors of virulence and specific pathogenesis-associated targets as well as species selective antibiotics.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:


	You are involved in research projects and scientific studies on the aforementioned topics with the possibility of writing a dissertation.
	Design and synthesis of compounds with biological activity.
	Application of compounds in controlling and interfering with phage-biology.
	Biological assay development.
	Target identification and/or natural product isolation and inhibitor discovery
	We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
	You work on your dissertation and its completion.
	You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
	You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.
	Preparation of research reports, manuscripts for publications and oral presentations.
	Supervision and training of students and staff members.

	Completed Master's degree or Diploma, in the field of chemistry, life sciences, biochemistry, molecular biology pharmacology, microbiology, or similar with synthetic chemistry skills.
	Basic experience in academic writing and with research methods (e.g. organic synthesis, developing and applying biological activity assays, microbial culturing)
	Didactic competences / experience with e-learning
	Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level)
	Very good organization skills, precision and diligence in laboratory work.

Description

The Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit Associate Research Scientist to work on advanced sustainable functionalized membranes for desalination and water treatment, under the supervision of Professor Nidal Hilal, Director of the Water Research Center and Global Professor of Engineering.

The successful applicant will drive an exciting project on developing functionalized membrane materials to tailor sustainable antifouling hybrid ultrafiltration membranes and antibacterial nanofiltration or reverse osmosis membranes for desalination and water purification. The candidate will explore advanced membrane fabrication techniques and characterization tools (SEM, AFM, Raman, TEM, DSC, XRD, FTIR, TGA, BET, etc.) to correlate fabrication-structure-property-performance of novel nanomaterials with sustainable membranes for desalination and water purification via separation processes. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and engineers, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

The successful applicant will manage the project and work closely with post-doctoral researchers, establish deep technical knowledge, and develop transferable skills. He/she will actively be involved in developing novel concepts and writing research proposals. He/she will work on solving complex problems with efficiency and creativity. He/she will be involved in writing progress reports, authoring peer-reviewed publications, drafting patents, and presenting results at national and international conferences. The successful candidate will have to demonstrate his expertise in assessing antibacterial and antibiofouling properties of nanomaterials, membrane fabrications, sewage water treatment, life cycle assessment, and separation processes. He/she will be detail-oriented and well-organized and will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Applicants must have a PhD in materials science and engineering, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field, along with at least 5 years of relevant post-PhD research experience. Analytical characterization skills and excellent experimental expertise relevant to assessing the antibacterial and antibiofouling properties of diversified sustainable membranes are required. Candidates with a history of peer-reviewed publications in a related research area and prior expertise in materials science, environmental chemistry, and water treatment will be preferred.

This position will begin in September 2026 as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance. The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. About the Role

We are seeking a committed and community-focused Lecturer / Supervising Solicitor to lead and supervise the day-to-day operation of UEL’s Legal Advice Centre. This is an excellent opportunity for a practitioner passionate about widening access to justice and developing the next generation of solicitors.
