Malaysia University of Science and Technology

In 1995, the Malaysian prime minister visited Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was suitably impressed. In January 1997, the Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) was born.
Like its progenitor, MUST is largely known by its acronym. MIT played a key role in shaping it during its early years, supporting its emphasis on creative thinking and problem solving. The teaching at MUST emphasises analytical thinking, innovation, collaboration and hands-on learning.
Undergraduate degrees are taught in four schools: business; sustainable supply chain and logistics; computing and artificial intelligence; and law enforcement. Postgraduate study is limited to the first three of these schools. 
The Student Experience and Affairs Department organises a range of activities, from Chinese New Year and Eid celebrations to sexual-harassment workshops, industrial talks and escape-room challenges. The student lounge includes table-tennis and snooker tables, as well as a hut for students to have quiet time.

Its work spans four key areas: energy transition, surface technology, polymers and composites, and sustainable materials. With over 70 researchers and PhD students, and strong national and international collaborations, MSN is a growing force in materials research.

Job Description: 

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with expertise in the purification of acidic and aqueous media, impurity separation, and materials characterization to join a cutting-edge research team. The project focuses on developing sustainable and optimized processes for the purification of industrial acidic and complex aqueous media through the selective removal and recovery of impurities to enable higher-purity acid products, impurity valorization, and more sustainable industrial processing.

The successful candidate will work on:


	Developing and optimizing selective purification and impurity-recovery strategies for acidic and aqueous media, including selection of reagents, precipitation agents, functionalized materials, ion-exchange resins, staged separation, and selectivity and yield optimization in multi-impurity systems.
	Reactor design and scale-up from batch to prototype, including process integration and mass transfer optimization under corrosive conditions.
	Investigating material stability, impurity control, and competing-species effects in highly acidic and complex matrices.
	Comprehensive use of characterization and quantification tools, including XRD, FTIR, and ICP for phase identification and major- and trace-level impurity quantification in acid and aqueous feeds and purified products.
	Contributing to collaborative proposals and Preparation of high-impact publications.


Position Requirements: 


	PhD in Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering with a focus on separation, purification, or resource recovery.
	Proven proficiency in advanced characterization of complex materials and multi-component solutions.
	Practical knowledge of structural and spectroscopic techniques for material and solution analysis (FTIR, XRD, SEM/EDS, ICP, HPLC). 
	Insight into acid–base and solution equilibria, speciation, and selectivity in chemically complex media.
	Demonstrated research in the selective separation or recovery of metals and impurities from complex aqueous or acidic media. 
	Practical background in reactor prototyping, scale-up, and process integration (batch-to-flow or modular configurations). 
	Proven ability to translate process development into scalable, field-relevant solutions.

Job Description :

We are seeking two highly motivated Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDF) for a collaborative project between SusMat-RC at UM6P and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Under the supervision of Professor Youssef Habibi, the successful candidates will focus on developing innovative recycling technologies for plastic waste through sustainable physical and/or chemical pathways.

Key duties include:


	Conducting hands-on polymer processing, recycling, and characterization.
	Designing, executing, and analyzing experiments using analytical, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques.
	Collaborating within an interdisciplinary team of chemists, polymer specialists, and engineers.
	Maintaining detailed experimental records and drafting technical reports, research papers, and conference presentations.

Role Description

We welcome applications from passionate, analytical and motivated researchers to advance understanding of how carbon is stored, stabilised and preserved in soils and underlying parent materials.

About the Role

This is a Research Fellow role embedded within a major externally funded research programme in soil science. You will lead the delivery of a substantial component of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, delivering advanced biogeochemical research to determine the origin, age and stability of organic carbon within soil parent materials. The role will involve applying and interpreting analytical and isotopic approaches, including radiocarbon methods, to distinguish petrogenic organic carbon from biospheric carbon inputs and quantify their contribution to carbon storage. You will contribute to field and laboratory research, coordinate specialist analytical workflows including work with external facilities such as the National Environmental Isotope Facility Radiocarbon Laboratory, analyse complex datasets, and publish high-quality scientific outputs. Working closely with the research lead and wider project team, you will help deliver novel interdisciplinary research across soil biogeochemistry, carbon stability and long-term carbon storage.

About You

You will be educated to doctoral level in soil biogeochemistry, geochemistry, soil science, environmental science, biogeoscience or a related discipline, with experience of conducting independent research in laboratory and field settings. You will have expertise in soil carbon analysis and interpretation, and ideally experience of isotopic or radiocarbon approaches relevant to environmental materials. You will be confident designing and delivering analytical workflows, interpreting complex datasets and preparing work for publication. With strong organisational and problem-solving skills, you will be able to manage multiple research activities to deadline and work effectively both independently and as part of a wider interdisciplinary team. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to engage confidently with collaborators, students and external partners. Willingness to travel within the UK and, where required, to external analytical facilities is essential.
