Lubbock Christian University
About Lubbock Christian University
Basic information and contact details for Lubbock Christian University
Lubbock Christian University is a private institution in North West Texas.
Established by members of the Churches of Christ, LCU – based in the city of Lubbock – gained full university status in 1987. Though still a relatively small, close-knit institution, LCU now runs more than 70 degree programmes, mostly at undergraduate level.
Though its population has exceeded 200,000, Lubbock still has a small town vibe. There are hundreds of shops and restaurants, dozens of parks and cinemas, and nine golf courses. LCU also has its own international airport. It has several universities, including Texas Tech, one of the largest in the state, which contribute to the city’s relatively young population. The birthplace of legendary singer-songwriter Buddy Holly, Lubbock has several museums and exhibitions devoted to the rock and roll star.
Located 65 miles from the New Mexico border but just over 200 miles south of Oklahoma, some consider Lubbock part of the “Panhandle”, Texas’ northernmost region. The nearest other cities are Amarillo and Abidene, with Dallas and Fort Worth more than 300 miles away. Located on the east side of town, LCU’s campus has long emphasised sustainability, energy conservation and recycling.
Singer Meat Loaf is the most high-profile LCU alumnus, studying at the university in the 1960s before moving to North Texas State University. Randy Velarde, the New York Yankees and Anaheim Angels outfielder, played baseball during his LCU days before turning professional.
