International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) was established as part of a multi-nation plan to develop educational systems across the Islamic world that combine religious and secular knowledge.

Because its courses are taught in English and Arabic, IIUM was originally a private university. But in 1983 it became a public university, opening with 153 Malaysian and international students. 

Today, IIUM has more than 30,000 students, across its seven campuses. Its main site is at Gombak, less than an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. Fourteen faculties offer more than 50 undergraduate programmes, lasting between three and five years. Faculties include: medicine; engineering; education; allied health sciences; and sustainable tourism and contemporary language.

There are a wide range of student-run clubs, arranged under the following headings: arts and culture; association and solidarity; da’wah and spirituality; entrepreneurship, environment and animal welfare, humanitarian and volunteerism, intellectual and knowledge; journalism and media; oratory; science and technology; self-defence; sports and recreational; support and services; and uniform bodies, such as air force and police. 

Student hostels include three daily prayers in congregation, as well as Qur’an recitation and memorisation. They also offer weekend talent-based activities.
