The role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a UKRI-funded fellowship project modelling how health and care needs change across England's diverse neighbourhoods as the population ages. You'll work closely with the Fellow (Dr Richard Green) during a focused period at the heart of the project's analytical work. This is a part-time (0.5 FTE) fixed-term contract until January 2027.

You will:


	Support the development of multilevel longitudinal models estimating health transition probabilities (e.g. functional decline, multimorbidity, care dependency) using linked ELSA and neighbourhood-level data
	Contribute to integrating these models into the English Future Elderly Model (E-FEM)
	Help translate modelling outputs into clear visualisations and summaries for policy and practice audiences, including NHS Integrated Care Boards and local authorities
	Work within the UK Data Service's secure research environment, applying rigorous approaches to data management and disclosure control
	Contribute to the preparation of policy briefs and support the planning of stakeholder workshops towards the end of the project


This is a hands-on research role suited to someone who wants to build applied experience in longitudinal and simulation modelling, working on a project with direct relevance to national health and social care policy.

About you

You will have:


	A postgraduate qualification (or equivalent research experience) in statistics, data science, or a related quantitative discipline
	Demonstrable experience conducting statistical or longitudinal data analysis using R (or a similar statistical programming language)
	The ability to work independently on technical tasks while communicating findings clearly to a non-specialist audience

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and innovative Postdoctoral Researcher to lead cutting-edge research into microgrid systems, clean energy integration and sustainable electricity solutions. You will play a pivotal role in developing and scaling the London Renewable Energy Demonstrator Lab (LREL), a flagship initiative combining solar, wind, battery storage and next-generation digital and modelling tools.

This exciting role would suit a researcher who thrives at the intersection of engineering, data science and industry collaboration, and is driven by the opportunity to create real-world solutions to complex energy challenges.

You will lead modelling, optimisation and feasibility studies, engage with collaborators and stakeholders, advance system design, and translate emerging technologies into pilot-scale applications.

What You’ll Do


	Design, model and optimise microgrid systems using energy analytics and advanced simulation tools
	Collaborate with industry partners to advance technology readiness and real-world applicability
	Support retrofit strategies, integrating renewable technologies with existing energy infrastructure
	Engage with policymakers, industrial partners and stakeholders to align project goals and secure off-take and PPA-related insights 
	Pilot and test emerging clean energy solutions using the LREL microgrid as a real system testbed
	Mentor students and junior researchers on microgrid-related research projects
	Produce high quality journal articles and present findings at international conferences
	Support competitive funding applications, proposal development and research bid activity
	Translate research outcomes into implementation pathways, pilot studies and feasibility assessments

	Proven experience with renewable energy technologies and microgrid integration

The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Free-Space Optics group. Satellite communications systems promise ubiquitous networks, but are fundamentally limited by spectrum availability, potential bandwidth and security resulting from the use Radio Frequencies for communications. Free Space Optical Communications offer an exciting technology which can provide a high bandwidth gateway to the satellite network, free of licensing requirements. In addition, point to point optical links are more secure that radio links where signal diverges over a large area, and can be further secured by Quantum Encryption techniques. On the other hand, optical links are affected by clouds (overcome by making various sites on the ground available) and turbulence in the atmosphere. Atmospheric turbulence introduces optical link instability, which if not compensated, negate the advantages of the optical link.

CfAI at Durham University has been developing Adaptive Optics systems for a number of decades to mitigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence on optical systems. Originally targeted to astronomy, optical communications is now a key activity for the group. We focus on tackling problems associated with very "strong" daytime turbulence, how to create a stable bi-direction optical link (also up to the satellite), and how to package these advanced technologies in compact and resilient modules to prove their commercial viability. In addition to actively compensating the turbulence, we also research the statistical theory behind the generation of turbulence and its effect on optical beams, develop software tools to simulate light propagation through the atmosphere, and create new and novel instrumentation to measure it in the field.

In this role, the successful candidate will lead the installation of a new optical ground station facility at Durham University. This station will be key to demonstrating the new turbulence mitigation techniques developed at CfAI and assessing their performance. This will involve various practical tasks to install design and install the station. There is significant freedom to develop and then test future turbulence mitigation or characterisation techniques using the group's simulation tools, then testing on the new station.

This post is fixed term for two years to coincide with funding from the University to support the project.

The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

The Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit Associate Research Scientist to work on advanced sustainable functionalized membranes for desalination and water treatment, under the supervision of Professor Nidal Hilal, Director of the Water Research Center and Global Professor of Engineering.

The successful applicant will drive an exciting project on developing functionalized membrane materials to tailor sustainable antifouling hybrid ultrafiltration membranes and antibacterial nanofiltration or reverse osmosis membranes for desalination and water purification. The candidate will explore advanced membrane fabrication techniques and characterization tools (SEM, AFM, Raman, TEM, DSC, XRD, FTIR, TGA, BET, etc.) to correlate fabrication-structure-property-performance of novel nanomaterials with sustainable membranes for desalination and water purification via separation processes. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and engineers, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

The successful applicant will manage the project and work closely with post-doctoral researchers, establish deep technical knowledge, and develop transferable skills. He/she will actively be involved in developing novel concepts and writing research proposals. He/she will work on solving complex problems with efficiency and creativity. He/she will be involved in writing progress reports, authoring peer-reviewed publications, drafting patents, and presenting results at national and international conferences. The successful candidate will have to demonstrate his expertise in assessing antibacterial and antibiofouling properties of nanomaterials, membrane fabrications, sewage water treatment, life cycle assessment, and separation processes. He/she will be detail-oriented and well-organized and will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Applicants must have a PhD in materials science and engineering, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field, along with at least 5 years of relevant post-PhD research experience. Analytical characterization skills and excellent experimental expertise relevant to assessing the antibacterial and antibiofouling properties of diversified sustainable membranes are required. Candidates with a history of peer-reviewed publications in a related research area and prior expertise in materials science, environmental chemistry, and water treatment will be preferred.

This position will begin in September 2026 as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance. The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children.
