Freed鈥揌ardeman University, based in Tennessee, has roots tracing back to members of the Churches of Christ who helped build it.
While the university is primarily undergraduate, it also serves some part-time, and adult students through distance-learning programmes. There are also a limited number of master's level subjects, which include: Bible studies, business, counselling, education, arts, and science.聽
Moreover, there are European study abroad opportunities based in the FHU facility in Belgium during both semesters. Meanwhile, a Spanish-language immersion programme is offered in Madrid during summer. Other opportunities include two and three-week study programmes in Israel, Costa Rica, New York City, and Canada.
All full-time students are required to take at least one Bible class every semester and attend a daily chapel service at the university.聽
There are a variety of university organisations available to students, which include: Student Government Association, University Chorale, Art Guild, Law Society, Society for Future Accountants, Preacher's Club, Math & Computer Science Club, and Biology Club.
The university newspaper is called the聽Bell Tower聽and is published 12 times throughout the year. While, the school's yearbook, known as the聽Treasure Chest聽which is available in the form of a DVD. Moreover the University's radio station is called WFHU, 91-FIVE.
Nicknamed the Lions, sports teams at聽Freed鈥揌ardeman teams are part of the聽National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics聽Division I level, and primarily compete in the聽American Midwest Conference. Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf and soccer; while women's sports include basketball, cheerleading, cross country, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball.
Annually,聽around the first weekend in December, the university has a fundraising dinner featuring well-known speakers such as: Baseball Hall of Famer聽Cal Ripken, Jr., former Presidents聽Gerald R. Ford聽and George H. W. Bush, Olympic gold medalist聽Mary-Lou Retton, and former First Lady聽Barbara Bush.聽
Notable alumni include Nicholas Brodie Hardeman, an educator, debater, and a gospel preacher within the church of Christ, Dianne Odell, a Tennessee woman who spent most of her life in an iron lung, and John J. DeBerry, Jr., an American politician and a Democratic member of the Tennessee House of Representatives.
