About the Team: Led by Professor David Bishop, the Exercise Prescription Lab (EPL) at Victoria University (VU) has two key research areas: Molecular Biology of Exercise and Exercise as Mitochondrial Medicine. The team combines foundational laboratory research with randomised controlled trials to understand how exercise alters molecular pathways and skeletal muscle adaptations, translating findings into personalised exercise prescriptions that improve fitness and health. With funding from the ARC, NHMRC, and the Australian Defence Force, the Exercise Prescription Lab significantly elevates Victoria University's global standing in exercise science and contributes cutting-edge, evidence-based knowledge with real-world impact on both clinical health and elite human performance. About the Role: The Institute for Health and Sport (IHES) is seeking to recruit a skilled and passionate post-doctoral researcher to investigate the role of lactate as a metabolic signal that can communicate with cells. This ARC-funded project aims to use the latest molecular biology techniques to challenge the long-standing paradigm of lactate as a metabolic ‘poison’ and to discover new biological roles for lactate as a regulator of skeletal muscle adaptations. The Research Fellow will ensure that the project is conducted to the highest standard. The position will be based at IHES facility at Footscray Park campus but may also require travel to other campuses. Position Key Duties  Undertake quality academic research, typically in collaboration with research students and/or research staff. Publish papers, articles and reports in high-impact academic journals, including journals, and conference proceedings. Assist with supervision of research undergraduate/interns, honours, Masters, and PhD students working on individual or group projects.  Prepare and submit external grant applications, and develop external research collaborations and partnerships. Demonstrated experience in cell culture techniques relevant to mechanistic molecular biology studies. Experience in sample preparation, quality control, and data validation procedures for: Next-Generation Sequencing  Proteomic analyses  Demonstrated training and experience in bioinformatics, including the analysis, interpretation, and integration of large-scale transcriptomic and proteomic datasets. Key Responsibilities: Reporting to the Executive Dean. The key responsibilities will be as follows: Provide leadership, operational and developmental capacity to the Executive Dean during a period of transformation within the MEC and the University, with an emphasis on Research and Innovation portfolio. Drive growth and consolidation of MEC partnership with industry, enterprise, or public sector partners that shape the MEC’s offer. Work in consultation with the Dean and senior leaders at MEC, as well as across the University's Faculties to support the development and delivery of the MEC. Lead and participate in significant MEC development, campus development, industry engagement growth projects, including chairing working groups, management committees that champion and further the University’s strategic ambition. Line manage MEC leadership roles tasked with the delivery of MEC programmes, or other roles in the MEC as delegated by the Executive Dean. Developing and promoting a Bristol-aligned research culture at MEC Deputise for the Executive Dean as required. Teaching and Research Deliver a select teaching contribution to the MEC Postgraduate/Undergraduate offer in the area of relevant expertise. Provide support for academic disciplines and interdisciplinary opportunities within the MEC in terms of developing the MEC’s research and innovation portfolio. Take leadership for the development and delivery of a quality Postgraduate Research that aligns clearly to the aspiration for MEC and the global engagement strategy of the University. Ensure research strengths are matched and leveraged to develop teaching excellence and integrated in MEC UG/PG programme offerings. Work with the University’s Thematic PVCs and APVCs to develop partnerships that enable strategic and cross cutting University developments to be realized within the MEC. Work closely with relevant Faculty PVCs and APVCs to drive close engagement between MEC Research, Innovation and Partnership activity and faculty strategies Resource Management Understand the nature of the disciplines within the MEC and support delivery of operational plans. Deliver the leadership and managerial duties associated with the role of the Associate Dean working with and delegating to MEC leadership (e.g. programme directors, professors) and Academic Officers in an efficient manner including maintaining and developing robust staff review, mentoring, well-being and development processes. Work collaboratively with Professional Services partners to deliver delegated administrative and governance duties. Support the Executive Dean through the University Planning cycle identifying high level needs and opportunities for MEC efficient delivery as well as integration into the overall University Planning. Provide budget and resource management support to the Executive Dean. Actively support colleagues to identify areas for income generation, including through research grants, that support financial sustainability for the MEC, as well as that drive clear joint research activities between Bristol and Mumbai. Work closely with a relevant Faculty PVC (and Faculty based APVCs) to set up by year 2 a dedicated faculty lead role for the MEC, and interim provide this themselves in year 1. Dr Jonathan West is Associate Professor in Biomedical Microfluidics. Research is focussed on clinical translation and technology commercialisation to benefit patient care. Jonathan has patented a microfluidic method for understanding platelet activity with potential to predict thrombosis risk and associated heart attack and stroke risk. The Role The role involves using an advanced microfluidic technology to monitor the platelets of patients with sepsis or severe respiratory infection. The research entails working with our partners at University Hospital Southampton and commercial partners providing comprehensive flow cytometry data sets to benchmark the microfluidic technology.
