About Autonomous University of Guerrero (UAGro)

Basic information and contact details for Autonomous University of Guerrero (UAGro)

institution

The Autonomous University of Guerrero (Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero, UAGro) was officially established in 1960, although its origins trace back to earlier educational institutions in the state of Guerrero, Mexico.

In 1963 it became an autonomous public university and began independently managing its academic and administrative affairs.

Initially, UAGro operated from several sites across the state, but it gradually expanded its reach to establish a widespread presence in Guerrero. Today, its main administrative and academic headquarters are located in Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, with additional campuses and facilities in cities such as Acapulco, Iguala, and Zihuatanejo.

Academically, the university is organised into different faculties and schools offering a range of programmes in areas such as health sciences, social and political sciences, natural sciences, education, law, engineering, business, and humanities. Within each faculty are different departments, which offer specialised courses at both undergraduate and graduate degree level.

It places particular emphasis on addressing local challenges, especially those affecting rural communities in Guerrero, through teaching, research, and community engagement.

Research at UAGro is driven by specialised centres and institutes that focus on regional development, environmental sustainability, and health innovation. These include the University Research Centre for the Environment and Development and the Tropical Medicine Institute.
