Africa University is a pan-African institution founded in 1992 under the United Methodist Church, following a call in the 1980s by African bishops to establish a higher education institution serving the continent. The main campus is located in Old Mutare, with an additional campus in Harare. It officially opened in 1994.

The university enrolls over 2,400 students from across Africa and beyond, supported by more than 75 faculty members. It offers 65 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across five academic units: the College of Business and Management Sciences; the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences; the College of Health, Agriculture and Natural Sciences; the College of Social Sciences, Theology, Humanities and Education; and the School of Law. Programmes cover agriculture, engineering, business, public health, law, theology and the social sciences.

Africa University has facilities including modern laboratories, the Jokomo-Yamada Library, the Kwang Lim Chapel, student accommodation and sports and recreational amenities.
