A record number of universities will be ranked in the?糖心Vlog World University Rankings 2026, published next month.?

A total of 2,191 institutions will feature in the table, a 5 per cent increase on?the World University Rankings 2025?and only the second time that more than 2,000 institutions will be ranked. The number of countries or territories represented has remained stable at 115.?

India will now be the second most-represented country in the ranking for the first time, with 128 institutions, up from 107 last year and just 19 in 2016. It is behind only the US, with 171 institutions, and overtakes Japan. Meanwhile, Turkey is now joint fourth on representation, alongside the UK, after increasing its number of ranked institutions from 91 to 109 this year. For the second year in a row, this makes India and Turkey the countries with the largest increases in the absolute number of ranked universities.?

Ukraine has also seen a significant rise in representation, with 22 institutions ranked this year, up from 17, a 29 per cent increase.??

World University Rankings 2026 numbers

Three countries have joined the ranking for the first time this year: Libya, Senegal and Yemen. Each of these countries is represented by one university.?

“It is wonderful to see that the exciting increase in research capacity and internationalisation in higher education means that more universities across the world – particularly the developing world – are now eligible to enter THE’s ‘gold standard’ world rankings, and that more are choosing to put themselves forward for rigorous, independent performance benchmarking to support their development,” said Phil Baty, 罢贬贰’蝉 chief global affairs officer.?

While data submission is open to all universities, institutions are only ranked in the World University Rankings 2026 if they teach undergraduates, produce research across a range of subjects and have published at least 1,000 research publications between 2020 and 2024, with a minimum of 100 a year.?

The data will also fuel?THE’s 2026?Subject Rankings, as well as several regional and thematic rankings, including the best universities in the?Arab?world, the?best universities in?Asia, the best universities in?Latin America and the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings.?

The World University Rankings 2026 will be published on 9?October 2025.?
