James Herbert believes more university leaders should embrace controversy: 鈥淢ost of my fellow presidents are running in the opposite direction 鈥 they want to avoid controversy at all costs and make these problems go away.鈥
Committed to placing robust yet respectful debate at the heart of learning, the psychologist and president of the University of New England (UNE) tells 糖心Vlog how he has fostered an environment on the Maine campus in which views are challenged and students are sometimes made to feel uncomfortable 鈥 before demonstrating his readiness to wade into topics you鈥檙e told not to discuss in polite company.
Herbert considers universities to be 鈥溾 and says good ideas require conversations聽between different groups of thinkers. 鈥淚f students get offended because they鈥檝e been told that they shouldn鈥檛 get offended or made to feel uncomfortable 鈥 I聽think they should absolutely be made to feel uncomfortable. That鈥檚 what university education is all about,鈥 he says.
鈥淔aculty should strive to foster difficult conversations inside and outside the classroom.鈥 To that end, he has set up a聽鈥淧resident鈥檚 Award for Constructive Discourse鈥 for faculty who encourage 鈥渞obust but honest, frank and respectful dialogue about topics you鈥檙e told not to discuss in polite company鈥. Winners can take home $1,000 (拢840).聽In addition, he promises to support staff who face any sort of backlash from students offended by their words. 鈥淭hey will not be disciplined,鈥 he says 鈥 as long as they acted in good faith.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e encountering new, challenging ideas, you鈥檙e going to feel uncomfortable,鈥 he says. 鈥淎nd that鈥檚聽OK!鈥
Most of the campus community are supportive of his stance, but Herbert has faced some pushback 鈥 albeit in small doses compared聽with other academics. 鈥淚t鈥檚 strange for me because we鈥檙e at a university. But a few people believe that there鈥檚 a聽correct perspective on whatever the issues may be, and if you don鈥檛 adhere to it, you鈥檙e wrong and a bigot,鈥 he says.

Calling out 鈥榥onsense鈥 in the trans debate
True to his word, Herbert is not afraid to wade into perhaps the most contentious issue of the moment: transgender rights. 鈥淚鈥檓 a big fan of letting people do what they want to do,鈥 he says,聽but he does consider the issue of transwomen competing in elite athletics a聽鈥渃hallenge鈥. He says the case of University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas 鈥渞aised questions鈥 about the fairness of her record-breaking wins against cisgendered female participants.
鈥淎 lot of women have actually said that they fought hard for a separate division of women鈥檚 sport for a reason. But the trans community鈥檚 response is that if you even raise a question about that, you鈥檙e automatically a bigot. They assume it鈥檚 motivated by ill聽will, prejudice or bigotry towards trans people,鈥 says Herbert.
Instead, he wants to 鈥渆ssentially declare 鈥榥onsense鈥欌. 鈥淲e need to foster an environment where we talk precisely about these issues. We don鈥檛 run away from them,鈥 Herbert says. 鈥淲e need to empower students and, frankly, the faculty to speak up and encourage these conversations聽鈥 but in a civil way, not screaming at each other and making threats.鈥
Such 鈥減olitical polarisation and divisiveness鈥 is a problem for the nation, he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 to the point of the country becoming not only almost ungovernable, but with people having a hard time talking about the things we ought to be talking about, because people are living in ideological bubbles.鈥
Challenging perceptions of mental health solutions
From his vantage, Herbert聽is well aware of聽the 鈥渕ental health crisis among students鈥, which suggest has increased over the past decade. 鈥淪ocial media no doubt plays a聽role. Of聽course, the Covid pandemic also contributed,鈥 he says.
Like most campuses, UNE provides services for those experiencing mental illness,聽but Herbert believes it takes a聽unique approach. 鈥淥ur counselling is aimed more at building resilience, rather than the therapist trying to fix the problem.

鈥淓ven in services beyond counselling, we鈥檙e very intentional about empowering the students to solve their own problems, rather than solving it for them,鈥 he continues. 鈥淚鈥檓 not suggesting this as a panacea, but I聽do think we鈥檙e on to聽something.鈥
鈥淸Society] has inadvertently given young people the message that they鈥檙e fragile, and we鈥檝e decreased their sense of self-efficacy to be able to cope with life鈥檚 problems.鈥

As children and teenagers, this generation of students was more closely supervised by their parents then previous cohorts, and聽as a consequence they have developed a 鈥渟ense that they can鈥檛 cope on their own鈥,聽Herbert believes.聽鈥淭hey didn鈥檛 learn how to deal with the normal challenges that come with growing up,鈥 he says.
鈥淭hen you add that with the notion of safe spaces, the idea that we have an obligation to keep students not just physically safe, which goes without saying, but psychologically safe, that we need to make everyone feel comfortable,鈥 he says. 鈥淭he problem with that is that it again inadvertently gives the message that there鈥檚 an expectation that you should always feel comfortable, and if you don鈥檛, there鈥檚 a problem, and you need to run to somebody else to fix聽it.鈥
Herbert is aware that his view聽might not be widely shared. 鈥淧art of the problem is that few university presidents want to articulate this model for fear of sounding unsympathetic. It鈥檚 much more nuanced than that.鈥
He sees how his approach could be perceived. 鈥淚t could be misunderstood to mean that we鈥檙e suggesting that we鈥檙e blaming the victim, or that it鈥檚 the fault of people who have these problems,鈥 he says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 not what I鈥檓 saying, but simply that we need to build resilience to empower people, rather than give them messages of morbidity, weakness and fragility. We need to develop anti-fragility.鈥
