A MAP on welfare service provision, drawn by a London School of Economics and Political Science researcher, reveals a significant shift from the public to private sector under Conservative Party rule.

Tania Burchardt, of the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion, has illustrated welfare service changes in education, housing, health and social security. The map shows that welfare spending going to private services rose from 39 per cent in 1979-80 to 49 per cent in 1995-96. The share of pure public sector provision (publicly provided, financed and decided) fell from 54 per cent in 1979-80, to 49 per cent in 1995-96.
