Ants and bacteria have inspired research that has netted two scientists at the University of Portsmouth major grants worth 拢652,000 from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. Andy Pickford picked up a 拢312,000 research grant to find new solutions to complicated problems in structural biology by using lessons learnt from the study of social insects such as ants. Anastasia Callaghan won a 拢340,000 grant to investigate a mechanism of genetic regulation within bacteria, which could help antibiotic research.
