The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) has become the first public American university authorised to听establish a campus in India, with the first cohort of students expected to begin their studies in August 2027.

CU Denver has received a letter of intent from India鈥檚 University Grants Commission (UGC) to听open a base in Hyderabad,听making it the first foreign university to launch in the state of Telangana in south-central India.

The university would also be the first public American听institution to launch on Indian soil. A private institution, the Illinois Institute of Technology, welcomed its inaugural cohort of students to its campus in Vikhroli, Mumbai this year.听

Telangana is one of India鈥檚 fastest-growing technology hubs with a听booming pharmaceutical sector and thriving start-up culture.

According to CU Denver, the Hyderabad location will 鈥渙ffer pathways for students in high-demand fields including business, computing, engineering, and analytics鈥. The university has said that additional programmes will be proposed to India鈥檚 UGC for approval in year two and beyond.

In a , Kenneth T. Christensen, chancellor at CU Denver, said: 鈥淓xpanding access to high-quality education has long been central to CU Denver鈥檚 vision and goals.听

鈥淥ur plans in Hyderabad build on that commitment, as well as our longstanding connection with students from India who have been part of the CU Denver community for decades.鈥

The chancellor said establishing a presence in India represents an 鈥渙pportunity to extend that connection鈥 and 鈥渂ring our unique experience to students in India鈥.听

Rahul Choudaha, the director of DrEducation Research,听said Hyderabad听is 鈥渁 strategic and competitive choice鈥 on the part of CU Denver, 鈥渁s it offers a relatively lower cost base as compared to Mumbai or Bengaluru, and hence can offer programmes at a lower tuition price point鈥.

Choudaha has previously argued that getting the pricing of a branch campus right is 鈥渃ritical鈥 to the long-term success of overseas ventures.

He added that, as the first university in Hyderabad, UC Denver may also be able to capture a 鈥渂igger local and regional student base鈥 compared听with the five campuses in competition with one another in Mumbai.

CU Denver has chosen the global education company Emeritus as a joint venture partner in the overseas initiative.

Ashwin Damera, co-founder and CEO of听Emeritus, said that the new campus 鈥渕arks an important step in bringing globally relevant education closer to students in India鈥.

鈥淐U Denver鈥檚 focus on applied learning, interdisciplinary education, and career readiness is particularly relevant to the aspirations of today鈥檚 students and the needs of a rapidly evolving workforce,鈥 said Damera.
