The UK鈥檚 universities are calling on Boris Johnson for support after he won the race to become Britain鈥檚 next prime minister.
Mr Johnson scored a decisive victory over Jeremy Hunt in the Conservative Party leadership election, with 92,153 votes,聽against Mr Hunt鈥檚 46,656.

Alistair Jarvis, UUK鈥檚 chief executive, said he hoped Mr Johnson will 鈥渟eize two early opportunities鈥 to support universities.

Firstly, he should 鈥渕ake good on his promise鈥 to support improved post-study work visas, Mr Jarvis said.
This would help UK universities to 鈥渞emain internationally competitive in attracting the international students who deliver such benefits to the economy, local communities and enrich our university campuses鈥, he added.

The decision to abolish post-study work visas was taken in 2012 when Theresa May was home secretary.
International student recruitment has since stagnated, with key global rivals such as the US and Australia聽providing more generous offers on post-study work than the UK.
A proposed amendment to the immigration bill, championed by the new PM鈥檚 brother and former Conservative universities minister, Jo Johnson, and Labour MP Paul Blomfield, would see the return of post-study work visas.
Secondly, if Mr Johnson is 鈥減olitically tempted to cut tuition fees鈥 鈥 following the recommendations of England鈥檚 Augar review 鈥 he should only do so if he can 鈥済uarantee the replacement funding鈥 needed by universities, said Mr Jarvis.

The Russell Group, which represents 24 leading UK universities, took to Twitter to call on Mr Johnson to help ensure research collaborations with EU partners 鈥渃an continue after Brexit鈥.
Such partnerships are feared to be under threat, especially聽in a no-deal Brexit.
