Most universities in Ireland have cancelled classes as academic staff joined public sector strikes across the country.
More than 300,000 public-sector employees are taking part in a 24-hour stoppage because of a dispute over pay negotiations with the Irish government. It is one of the country鈥檚 largest strikes in almost two decades.

University staff say they want a new deal covering the rest of 2026 and 2027, along with progress on commitments to improve conditions for precarious and fixed-term staff. 鈥淭he demand is straightforward: the government must come to the table and negotiate meaningfully with the unions representing public service workers,鈥 the group said on 听They also want universities to consult staff before making changes such as adjusting workloads or restructuring departments.听
