Glyn Davis is temporarily returning as vice-chancellor at the University of Melbourne following the聽death of former聽head Emma Johnston from cancer complications last year.
Davis, who previously served as the university鈥檚 vice-chancellor from 2005 to 2018, will take on the interim role on聽2 February while a search for a permanent vice-chancellor continues, the university said in a statement on 12 January.
鈥淒uring this聽time,聽he made an extraordinary contribution to the university, including the introduction of the Melbourne curriculum,鈥 the university said, referencing its switch to a聽broader undergraduate degree structure during Davis鈥 previous tenure as vice-chancellor.听
Davis聽was also secretary聽of the聽Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet聽from June 2022 to June 2025 and currently chairs Opera Australia. He began his academic career at聽Griffith University, where he went on to become vice-chancellor and president from 2002 until 2005.听

Johnston died aged 52 following聽an 11-month tenure as head of the institution.听The marine biologist passed away 鈥渄ue to complications associated with cancer鈥, the university said on 29 December.听She was the university鈥檚 first female vice-chancellor.听
Davis said he would 鈥渉onour the legacy鈥 of Johnston and聽鈥渃ontinue the work to make the University of Melbourne a world-leading and globally connected Australian university鈥.

Melbourne鈥檚 chancellor, Jane Hansen, thanked Davis for once again serving the university聽in the vital leadership role.听
鈥淚n making this appointment, the university council鈥檚 focus was on ensuring leadership, stability and confidence as we work toward realisation of the strategic goals outlined in聽the聽approved聽Strategy 2030,鈥 Hansen said, referring to a road map outlining the university鈥檚 goals.

Davis is聽married to聽Margaret Gardner, governor of Victoria and former vice-chancellor of Monash University.听听
