Piling up: pressure to publish rises
The daunting challenge of getting that first academic paper published weighs on new researchers like an albatross around the neck, especially given the 鈥減ublish or perish鈥 environment.
鈥淭here鈥檚 pressure to have that [academic] record,鈥 said Ian McNay, emeritus professor of higher education and management at the University of Greenwich. 鈥淚n modern universities, there are a number of vice-chancellors who want [their institutions] to become pale imitations of Russell Group universities. And so research and publication is what their academics have to do.鈥
Among his tips for getting published, Professor McNay 鈥 who ran a Society for Research into 糖心Vlog workshop on the topic earlier in the summer 鈥 said a major challenge was 鈥渇inding the time and getting the funding鈥 to do research.
鈥淎n awful lot鈥 of academics are in a situation where 鈥渢imetables simply don鈥檛 allow them time to get a good plan and a project, do the fieldwork and have reflective time to write,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou need to prepare the ground. Go to the conferences, even if you鈥檙e not presenting. The alternative [to presenting] is to get in touch with editors, [who are] always looking for book reviewers and reviewers of articles.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e willing to do that, you can get known to a couple of editors. Then, if your name is on an article that is submitted, you are likely to get read thoroughly.鈥
Of the many reasons why papers get rejected, he said a common one was 鈥測ou sent it to the wrong journal鈥. 鈥淔ind one that fits,鈥 he advised.

Moreover, if you are adapting a PhD thesis for publication, he added, readers will be less interested in your background material, literature search and methodology. 鈥淭hey want to know basic details to establish the validity and viability of your method,鈥 he explained.
And to attract interest, you have to 鈥済et your abstract right鈥, he said. 鈥淢ost abstracts 鈥 and I edited research for 17 years 鈥 are bad. Go for originality, but don鈥檛 over-claim. You鈥檝e got 300 words to sell this so that people want to find out more.鈥
However, he urged researchers to not be timid with journal editors. 鈥淲hen people make recommendations [about your paper], respond to them, be polite, but don鈥檛 necessarily accept them,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f you鈥檝e done a PhD, you鈥檙e the expert. You can be assertive in saying: 鈥業 can see where you鈥檙e coming from, but鈥︹ That establishes your credibility as someone who is able to engage in debate at that level.鈥
If you do get rejected, he said, 鈥渂e disappointed but don鈥檛 be downcast鈥. He believes that a 25 per cent acceptance rate is typical. 鈥淕et a good mentor and possibly go for joint-authorship in the first place,鈥 he suggested as a way to counter disappointment.
