The Lady鈥檚 Magazine (1770-1818): understanding the emergence of a genre
This will examine the historical and cultural significance of one of the most influential periodicals of its day (and precursor of the modern women鈥檚 magazine). It affords a 鈥渦nique window鈥 into women鈥檚 engagement with the world at the turn of the 19th century, Dr Batchelor said. 鈥淔irst, we will produce an annotated index of contributor pseudonyms, which will allow us to analyse career profiles, and list, where we can prove them, the identities of individual magazine authors. Second, we will produce a statistical/interpretive analysis of the magazine鈥檚 generic composition as the publication reimagined itself to reflect shifting literary tastes and cultural values over five decades.鈥 The project may serve to 鈥渞evise our conceptions of Romantic-era print culture鈥, she added.
