Backpackers are good-value tourists

Governments in less developed countries often ignore the impact of backpackers on their economies, says Mark Hampton, a development economist at the University of Portsmouth. Dr Hampton is researching the impact of backpacker tourism in South-east Asia. Most of backpackers' expenditure goes directly into the local economy as they generally stay longer in a region than conventional tourists, stay in locally owned hotels and eat at local outlets.
