Measures of institutions鈥 levels of 鈥渋nternationalisation鈥 are seriously inadequate, according to a University of Warwick .

Far too often, universities assume that a larger proportion of international students automatically 鈥渋mproves students鈥 satisfaction鈥, 鈥測ields an integrated student community鈥 and 鈥渓eads to global skills鈥.

That is according to How internationalised is your university? From structural indicators to an agenda for intertegration, produced by researchers at Warwick Applied Linguistics.

In reality, the evidence suggests that without 鈥渁n agenda for integration鈥, 鈥渢he greater the proportion of non-UK students in the total student population, the less positive the student experience ratings are鈥.

Members of large national cohorts which are not picked up in the simple distinction between 鈥渉ome鈥 and 鈥渋nternational鈥 students can impact negatively on the 鈥渜uality of interaction between people of different backgrounds鈥, the report says, while 鈥済lobal skills鈥 do not develop without 鈥渕ixed-nationality group work鈥 or integration policies 鈥渁pplied to the classroom as well as the campus鈥.

Though structural and numerical factors are important, the authors point to 鈥渁 range of reports [which] have repeatedly argued that there are low levels of intermixing in further and higher education communities鈥.

Despite the widespread 鈥渞ace for international students/staff/partners, less attention seems to have been paid to the social viability of internationalising a university鈥檚 community,鈥 the researchers conclude.

Universities which really want to maximise the benefits of internationalisation, including students graduating with the global skills employers are crying out for, need to pay far more attention to the 鈥溾榠ntercultural鈥 component, which takes into account the social complexity of truly internationalised university communities鈥.
