Turn and turn again

Grant Guilford, vice-chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington, is entitled to his views about the need for New Zealand to become a 鈥渃reature of the Asia-Pacific鈥, but they are not necessarily representative of the country鈥檚 higher education sector as a whole (鈥A new outlook: New Zealand's universities turn towards Asia鈥, News, 8 December).

If New Zealand鈥檚 universities have an ounce of sense, they will forge links with Asia while maintaining links with Europe and North America. Unfortunately, we suffer from the same problem as many universities, as noted in your article about the comments made by John Aubrey Douglass (鈥University leadership 鈥榩oor鈥 quality, says higher education scholar鈥, News, 2 December). Academics are promoted into positions where they lack the necessary skills to perform well.
