Perhaps it would be more accurate for the article on highly selective universities lowering their entry standards to point out that so-called 鈥渆lite universities鈥 are no longer quite so elite (鈥Elite universities lower entry standards to expand, report reveals鈥, 17 December)? It鈥檚 rather depressing to read Mary Curnock Cook, Ucas鈥 chief executive, encouraging students to apply to more 鈥渁mbitious鈥 universities that she somehow sees as more 鈥渟elective鈥, when the evidence of the Ucas report is quite clear: these universities are no longer so selective. Perhaps she might encourage students to be more 鈥渁mbitious鈥 by choosing a university based on the quality and satisfaction of the education offered and not just by reputation? Ucas is here to represent (and is funded by) all universities, not just the self-appointed elite of the Russell Group.
