David Toop surely could try harder in struggling to think about fiction about music or musicians that doesn鈥檛 ring false (鈥Books interview: David Toop鈥, Books, 23 June). There is a whole tradition of such writing in black literature that often makes the music the subject of the novel, from Ralph Ellison鈥檚 wonderful reimaginings of Louis Armstrong鈥檚 Black and Blue and Robert Johnson鈥檚 blues 鈥淐rossroads鈥 in Invisible Man through Toni Morrison鈥檚 speakeasy joints in Jazz to Jackie Kay鈥檚 brilliant black British horn player in Trumpet. This tradition needs to be celebrated not ignored.
