Physical distraction

Having read Heather Widdows鈥 book聽Perfect Me: Beauty as an 鈥‥thical Idea, I was disappointed that the news article discussing it (鈥Beauty is now an ethical ideal鈥, 24 May) focused on the author鈥檚 appearance in its standfirst (鈥淢atthew Reisz talks to a philosopher using 鈥榩aint, powder, leather and heels鈥 to 鈥榰nsettle status quo鈥欌) and in its first four paragraphs, rather than on the book鈥檚 substance.

Widdows does, I grant, say those things 鈥 but all within the first two pages of the acknowledgements. Women continue to suffer from the fact that many men find their appearance to be their most interesting feature; indeed, how much they suffer from that is one of the things that Widdows鈥 book establishes. It is a pity that this article continues that trend.
