I write regarding a blog post that appeared on 20 December, 鈥King鈥檚 College London 鈥榳rong鈥 to erase George Carey from wall of fame鈥 (www.timeshighereducation.com), relating to the removal from King鈥檚 College London鈥檚 Strand Campus windows of a number of portraits of alumni, including Lord Carey of Clifton, the former Archbishop of Canterbury. The opinion piece was apparently based on an article in our student newspaper, Roar. This implied that Lord Carey had been the focus of the digital refresh, which was misleading.
The King鈥檚 Strand windows containing portraits of eminent alumni had remained largely unchanged for many years. Some 18 months ago, King鈥檚 started planning for the introduction of digital window displays to enable research and educational achievements, as well of those of our alumni, to be highlighted. A number of images were removed to achieve this, with the knowledge and consent of the individuals, including Lord Carey.
Lord Carey is one of our most distinguished alumni and a great friend of the university. We will continue to refer to Lord Carey, with his permission, as one of the most eminent people to have studied at King鈥檚 and are honoured by his ongoing association with the university.
