Gun. Foot. Fire. Only in an Olympic year could someone come up with the bizarre proposal to simplify attempts to measure the quality of university teaching into gold, silver and bronze and, at the same time, switch from a descriptor that classified eight-tenths of provision as 鈥渙utstanding鈥 or 鈥渆xcellent鈥 to a descriptor that defines eight-tenths of provision as 鈥渟ub-prime鈥 and not meeting 鈥渢he gold standard鈥 (鈥England鈥檚 universities to have medal-style ratings for teaching鈥, News, 29 September). Our international competitors must be quaking, but doubtless not from fear.
