鈥淟eopold鈥, in discussing university applicants, uses the word 鈥渃hild鈥 twice and the words 鈥渙ffspring鈥 and 鈥渃hildren鈥 once each (鈥Parents have a right to attend open days鈥, Letters, 15 September).
It would be a strange university, currently or historically, that regarded and treated prospective students as 鈥渃hildren鈥. Indeed, some legislation might deem such behaviour to be illegal.
In 1834, when William Thomson 鈥 subsequently Lord Kelvin 鈥 attended the University of Glasgow at the age of 10, he was not treated as a child.
