How higher education institutions are performing against SDG 11 - sustainable cities and communities

ÌÇÐÄVlogÌýand UNESCO-±õ·¡³§´¡³¢°äÌýhave produced aÌýreportÌýexploring what higher education institutions are doing to meet SDG 11 – sustainable cities and communitiesÌý

Today, more than 80% of the global GDP is generated in cities and, by 2050, 68% of the world population is expected to live in cities, which will increase the demand for resources as well as services and infrastructure. This higher pressure on resources will also have anÌýenvironmental and social impact, underpinning the vital role cities play in the pursuit of sustainable development.Ìý

TheÌýÌý– calls for more inclusive, safe,ÌýresilientÌýandÌýsustainable cities and human settlements.ÌýThis requires intelligentÌýurban planning thatÌýfacilitatesÌýopportunities for all, with access to basicÌýservices, energy, housing,ÌýtransportationÌýand green public spaces, whileÌýreducing disaster risks as well as resource use and environmental impact.ÌýÌý

ÌÇÐÄVlog Institutions (HEIs), such as universities, can playÌýanÌýimportant roleÌýby collaborating with governments, localÌýstakeholdersÌýandÌýcitizens to tackle these issues. HEIs can do so byÌýprovidingÌýhuman capital,ÌýcapacityÌýbuilding, research, innovation, enterprises,ÌýinfrastructureÌýandÌýspecialized services, amongst other engagement activities.ÌýÌý

TheÌýreportÌýThe Contribution of ÌÇÐÄVlog Institutions to Sustainable Cities and CommunitiesÌýexamines how HEIs across the globe areÌýcontributing towards SDG 11 from different perspectives which are leading onÌýthis work in their respective regions.ÌýÌý

It includes a review of the governmentÌýpolicy contexts that affect HEIs in their efforts to contribute to SDG11 and aÌýreview of initiatives that HEIs can do to contribute to SDG11, ranging fromÌýstrategies to supporting mechanisms or activities, along with the analysis ofÌýquantitative indicators on how a sample of universities around the world areÌýperforming in this area.ÌýÌý

This is complemented byÌýfourÌýgood practice cases ofÌýHEIs worldwide. The report concludes with key insights and recommendationsÌýfor HEIs and policymakers.Ìý
