I聽am surprised to hear the view that examiners do not read all of a PhD (鈥Last era鈥檚 model鈥, Features, 21 May). In my experience of about 35 PhD examinations, I聽have read the whole thesis and marked it with notes for the viva.
I聽also take issue with the time 鈥渨aiting to be examined鈥. Unless I聽am missing some funding source, I聽would assume that today鈥檚 candidates need to do what I聽did and start work while they wait for the viva. This is therefore not wasted time as viva preparation takes place in parallel with whatever post follows.
I聽would not say that the PhDs I聽have supervised, nor those that I聽have examined, were part of a 鈥渃onveyor belt鈥. They have all been different and the students all progressed as researchers and people during their completion.
