鈥淚 can鈥檛 say I鈥檝e ever heard of this particular university, but it certainly seems to have the right idea when it comes to putting academics in their place.鈥

That was how Brian Bryan, our Deputy Head of REF Strategy, responded to the news that Glasgow Caledonian University had instructed all its academics to focus their research on the priorities that had been selected by the university as the ones most likely to attract funding.

Academics who did not align with the priorities 鈥 inclusive societies, healthy lives and sustainable environments 鈥 would, according to Mike Mannion, Glasgow Caledonian鈥檚 pro vice-chancellor for research, not only get 鈥渓ess financial support鈥 but also less 鈥渆motional support鈥.

Mr Bryan told The Poppletonian that this Glasgow Caledonian strategy was 鈥渙ne giant step鈥 towards the vitally important goal of ensuring that all academic research was based on its likely economic outcome rather than on the 鈥渆ssentially romantic notion鈥 that it should relate in some way to an academic鈥檚 own research interests.

He was, however, 鈥渕ildly alarmed鈥 by Professor Mannion鈥檚 further declaration that 鈥渋f people start to do some research in areas that aren鈥檛 aligned with the major challenges and themes, we have not said 鈥榶ou can鈥檛 do it鈥.鈥

This concession, said Mr Bryan, was 鈥渄angerously reminiscent鈥 of the 鈥渨oolly-minded liberalism鈥 that characterised universities in 鈥渢he bad old days of intellectual freedom鈥.

Poppleton鈥檚 thrusting Director of Corporate Affairs, Jamie Targett, has told reporter Keith Ponting (30) that he sees no place on our campus for the 鈥渄angerous extremists鈥 from the Fractionals for Fair Play Group (FFFP).

Targett described the group鈥檚 demand for more pay for graduate teaching assistants as 鈥渆ssentially anachronistic鈥 in that it dated back to a time when teaching was a key aspect of university life.

But now that we had moved on to that happy point when, according to David Oldfield, lecturer in the history of art at the University of Cambridge, 鈥渁 lecturer鈥檚 research is seen as more important than a student鈥檚 education鈥, teaching very much sat alongside such other essential but ancillary campus tasks as covered-way maintenance and bicycle shed management.

A spokesperson for the Bicycle Shed Management team later described Targett鈥檚 words as 鈥渦nnecessarily demeaning鈥.
