The government鈥檚 surprise abolition of the student number cap for England earlier this month had bloggers across the country scrambling to have their say.

鈥淟ike everyone else I thought this year鈥檚 Autumn Statement was going to聽focus on the cost of living, energy and fuel prices,鈥 he writes. 鈥淔or all I know it聽might have done but I haven鈥檛 yet got past the announcement of 30,000聽extra university places next year and the abolition of all number聽controls in 2015-16.鈥
Mr Westwood says he is pleased that 鈥渁fter all of the arguments about both the affordability and the聽desirability of a mass higher education system, George Osborne has聽come down firmly and decisively in favour of both鈥. He describes the announcement as a 鈥済ame-changer鈥, although adds that it is 鈥渇iendishly difficult鈥 to assess whether ministers鈥 plans to pay for the expansion through the sale of the student loan book are feasible.

鈥淭here will be more places AND more competition 鈥 great news for those聽institutions already doing well 鈥 more worrying for those that aren鈥檛聽currently able to reach their target numbers under the existing聽system,鈥 he concludes.
On the Vox Political blog, journalist he feels Mr Osborne neglected to include in his speech. The chancellor said that the additional funding would be 鈥渇inanced by selling the old student loan book, allowing thousands more to achieve their potential鈥; however, Mr Sivier feels he should have added that this would be 鈥減ushing thousands into the hands of debt collectors鈥.

Author and higher education expert on his Critical Education blog that one of the 鈥渂iggest conundrums鈥 resulting from the announcement is 鈥渉ow to control the finances without 鈥榗ore鈥 recruitment caps set for each institution鈥. He suggests that the answer could lie in the Browne review, which recommended introducing what he describes as a 鈥渄ifferent form of control鈥.
鈥溙切腣log and EU students with university places would only qualify for 鈥榮tudent support鈥, loans and maintenance grants, if they achieved a minimum 鈥楿cas tariff鈥,鈥 he explains.
He then quotes Mr Osborne saying that the proposed expansion would be for 鈥測oung聽people who have worked hard at school, got the results,聽want to go on learning and want to take out a loan to pay for it鈥.
鈥淎 minimum entry requirement of this kind would keep control of finances, but test the limits of traditional 鈥榠nstitutional autonomy鈥 and present difficulties for dealing with other qualifications and other forms of experience,鈥 he concludes.

The New Left Project, which promises 鈥渉igh quality comment and analysis on issues of concern to the political left鈥, used its blog 鈥 perhaps unsurprisingly 鈥 . 鈥淥f all the lines in George Osborne鈥檚 autumn statement speech this week, the idea that UK higher education is on a 鈥榮ecure footing鈥 ranked high on a scale of taking the bloody piss,鈥 it says. 鈥淭his was days after the second strike of higher education workers this term.鈥
