Vladimir Tismaneanu, in his appreciative review of Robert Gellately鈥檚 Stalin鈥檚 Curse: Battling for Communism in War and Cold War, makes the startling claim that 鈥淪talin was intent upon provoking a new world war鈥 (鈥Painting the world Red鈥, Books, 7 March).
Yet in 鈥淩emarks on Economic Questions Connected with the November 1951 Discussion鈥, a section in his booklet Economic Problems of Socialism in the USSR dated February 1952, Stalin makes it clear that capitalist countries, 鈥渁lthough they clamour, for 鈥榩ropaganda鈥 purposes, about the aggressiveness of the Soviet Union鈥, nevertheless 鈥渁re aware of the Soviet Union鈥檚 peaceful policy and know that it will not itself attack them鈥.
Many of us will read Gellately鈥檚 important book to learn how he resolves this contradiction between Stalin the paranoid warmonger and Stalin the supporter of a peace movement to prevent another world war.
