Hannah Arendt apparently said 鈥済oodbye to philosophy once and for all鈥 and instead preferred 鈥渢hinking without bannisters鈥 (鈥A worldly thinker鈥, Features, 26 February). However, a bannister does provide valuable support when climbing a staircase 鈥 quite reassuring after two or three floors in the early hours of Saturday morning.
I think I鈥檇 be happier if Jon Nixon鈥檚 article had included notional bannisters from Arendt鈥檚 work, to support not only my own meagre consciousness but the far trickier (and ambiguous) arena of 鈥渢hinking together with others鈥. In other words, after a life spent thinking, Arendt鈥檚 legacy needs to be expressed as user-friendly practical tools which help others.
