Felipe Fern谩ndez-Armesto is annoyed by students鈥 ignorance of their own language (鈥Irrevocably tongue-tied鈥, Opinion, 22 May): they submit essays riddled with repetition, clich茅s, jargon and the horrors of syntactical disfigurement. He would like to see 鈥 across disciplines 鈥 鈥渃larity, concision and accuracy in the use of English鈥.

But if students are to write precisely with a聽鈥渓ove of language鈥, don鈥檛 they need to find some topic related to their university subject about which they care greatly? I guess the lucky ones fall head over heels with almost everything on the syllabus.
