To think that learning requires teaching that is more than mere stimulation and titillation (鈥Make a class a haven鈥, Features, 18聽September). With 10聽years of online teaching, I have matured out of the bells-and-whistles approach in my online sociology classes by trimming back to only two short videos all semester, with our time spent reading, thinking and writing in what can be a聽virtual sanctuary, too.
I聽use the 鈥渄iscussion鈥 forums that are usually 鈥渓eft to the students for free exchange鈥, not unlike the 鈥渃onforming鈥 small groups in the classroom, but with one big difference: I聽participate 鈥渇ully鈥 and join the conversations, bust up the conforming 鈥渕e toos鈥 and critique and challenge every student. This requires a lot of time. But the students learn and love it.
