I聽graduated in philosophy from a Russell Group university in 2012, and although I聽now have a good job (with that university) I聽still have the half-joking jibes about the practical use of my degree that Emily Howard describes in 鈥After great expectations鈥鈥 (Opinion, 22 May).
I聽do not agree with the assertion, however, that universities 鈥渕ust take greater care that the courses they offer provide genuine routes into employment鈥. If my university had had fewer lectures on Marx and more on marketing, I聽probably would still have gone to the lectures on Marx. Then again, my tuition fees were only 拢3,000 a聽year, so perhaps I聽simply had lower expectations.
