Lara Cook, in her laudatory review of Sheila Fitzpatrick鈥檚 On聽Stalin鈥檚 Team: The Years of聽Living Dangerously in Soviet Politics (Books, 29 October), states that Stalin鈥檚 team 鈥渆ven into the 1930s, continued to wear a聽version of military uniform in civilian life鈥. The exception here is surely Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov, who was always dapper in a聽suit and tie, and whom Churchill regarded with 鈥渉is smile of Siberian winter, his carefully measured and often wise words, his affable demeanour鈥 as 鈥渢he perfect agent of Soviet policy in a聽deadly world鈥.
