This week’s competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from an American writer who was brought up in England and educated at Dulwich College:

“It was about eleven o'clock in the morning, mid-October, with the sun not shining and a look of hard wet rain in the clearness of the foothills.”
