Final Word

This week's Final Word comes from an author who has had much to do with Brazzaville, Yankees and ice cream, but not in this case:

"Innocence lay in the muddy compound of the servants' quarters, and Murray lay on a marble slab in the Ademola morgue. The thunder passed on towards the coast and, somewhere, Shango, that mysterious and incomprehensible god, flashed and capered happily above the silent dripping jungle."

The winner of last week's competition, who correctly identified E. M. Forster's A Passage to India , is C. W. Watson of Eliot College, Canterbury.
