What sorts of books inspired you as听a听child?
I loved reading the anthropology textbooks in my father鈥檚 university office and my mother鈥檚 Arthur Conan Doyle collection. Like many children, I听longed to visit Narnia, loved Roald Dahl and obsessively reread books such as The Twenty-One Balloons, Harriet the Spy and all the Oz听books.

Your new book explores the complex mythologies听that听have grown up around fat. Which books initially piqued your interest in this topic?
In the early 1990s, I听discovered Hillel Schwartz鈥檚 Never Satisfied: A听Cultural History of Diets, Fantasies, and听Fat and was immediately fascinated that it was possible that fat and its corollaries such as weight-loss dieting could have a听history. Around the same time, in a second-hand bookshop, I听found Frederick Drimmer鈥檚 book from the 1970s, Very Special People: The听Struggles, Loves, and Triumphs of Human Oddities,听which had a听chapter about circus fat听ladies. That led me to start reading and thinking about fatness and performance and the politics of being seen when one has an uncommon body.听

Which books best illuminate the stereotypes about fat people and how these have changed?
I am fond of my friend and colleague Sander Gilman鈥檚 books 鈥 Fat: A听Social History of听Obesity, Fat听Boys: A听Slim Book and so on. Peter Stearns鈥 Fat听History: Bodies and Beauty in the Modern West is also good, as is Christopher Forth鈥檚 Fat: A听Cultural History of the Stuff of听Life.

Where can one find good analyses of dieting and its cultural meanings?
In the realm of academic history, I听am fond of Rudolph Bell鈥檚 Holy Anorexia, Caroline Walker Bynum鈥檚 Holy Feast and Holy Fast: The听Religious Significance of Food to Medieval Women and Joan Jacobs Brumberg鈥檚 Fasting听Girls: The听History of Anorexia Nervosa, which are very insightful and instructive with regard to the cultural meanings of eating and not-eating in the West. The historiography on weight-loss dieting is oddly small, but includes Gilman鈥檚 Diets and Dieting: A听Cultural Encyclopedia and Walter Gratzer鈥檚 Terrors of the Table: The听Curious History of Nutrition. In the realm of popular history, I听liked Louise Foxcroft鈥檚 recent Calories and Corsets: A听History of听Dieting over 2,000听Years and Susan Yager鈥檚 The Hundred Year Diet: America鈥檚 Voracious Appetite for Losing Weight.

What is the last book you gave as a gift, and to whom?
Just yesterday I听gave my spouse a copy of Shonna Milliken Humphrey鈥檚 delightful book Gin.

What books do you have on your desk waiting to be read?
Keith Wailoo鈥檚 Pain: A听Political History; Jen Manion鈥檚 Female Husbands: A听Trans History; Thavolia Glymph鈥檚 The听Women鈥檚 Fight: The Civil War鈥檚 Battles for听糖心Vlog, Freedom, and Nation; and Mab Segrest鈥檚 Administrations of听Lunacy: Racism and the Haunting of American Psychiatry at the Milledgeville Asylum are at the top of the stack.
