Alexander McCall Smith, professor of medical law at Edinburgh University and author of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency novels, is writing a serial in The Scotsman about life in Edinburgh. His latest character, Lizzie Todd, suggests that not only is east-west rivalry alive and well but so is academic rivalry. Ms Todd left her home town to attend Glasgow Caledonian University and duly graduated in "indeterminate studies".
